Sadly for Angel, like many poor adolescents in the impoverished cities that line the mountainous region of his country, he’s been saddled with greater responsibilities than a boy his age should ever have to assume. As the family's sole breadwinner since the age of 10, Angel must take care of his sick younger brother, Pepito, whom he adores, and their abusive, alcoholic father, Antonio. Daily, Angel makes his money by shining the shoes of a colourful line-up of regular customers. He has never had time to dream of a life off the streets, but that hasn't stopped him from hoping one day to see the beautiful ocean that his mother used to tell him about as a child, before she ran away to United States with another man.
Today, the Plaza San Francisco, where Angel works, is full of activity. The preparations for the Republic's independence celebrations this coming weekend are well under way, but the festivities hinge around a general strike planned for tomorrow. The workers plan to protest against government corruption, false promises, gas prices, insurance rates and lies, but all Angel is concerned about is making enough money to get through the rest of the week.
The morning goes by like every other day for Angel and his shoe-shining brethren, but by the beginning of the afternoon something very unexpected happens, and suddenly everything changes. Angel’s routine existence, along with the lives of his father, his brother, a wealthy businessman, a restaurateur, an honest local police chief, the manipulative President of the Republic, a cynical journalist, a beautiful banker, an elderly revolutionary, and a brutal drug trafficker are all forever changed by an unstoppable sequence of events. Each and every one these characters are taught one of life's hardest lessons - that nothing comes for free.
In the tradition of Latin American literature’s multi-character narrative, Angel’s story is woven into the tapestry of events that take place during that remarkable weekend. His life becomes inexorably linked to the fate of those with whom he crosses paths with along the way to becoming his own man.

I loved this book. It was a quick read.It had a couple of twists and turns in the plot that were unexpected and I didn't see coming.
I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. It was that good.
Highly recommended.

I liked this book very much.
I loved this book. It was a quick read.
It had a couple of twists and turns in the plot that were unexpected and I didn't see coming.
I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. It was that good.
